Sugar Friday: Blueberry Boy Bait

No boy (or girl) can turn down a slice of Blueberry Boy Bait!

I love a good story, and the story behind this week’s Sugar Friday treat is hard to resist. In 1954, a 15-year-old girl won second place in the junior division of the Pillsbury Bake-Off with her creation, Blueberry Boy Bait. It was named, she said, after the effect it had on boys. One bite, and the boys were hooked. Now, doesn’t that make you want to head into the kitchen and start baking? It did for me. And my boys, big and small, loved it! In fact, it took forever to take a photo of it because I had pudgy two-year-old fingers trying to sneak it off the plate!

There are a few variations of the recipe online but the best one I found is from Sticky Gooey Creamy Chewy, a truly diverse food blog run by Susan, a writer, food columnist, and former lawyer based out of Florida. I suggest you bookmark SGCC because it has a lot (as in you’ll be scrolling down for a while) of delicious-sounding recipes, including many more wonderful baking ones. You may notice the amount of butter in Blueberry Boy Bait, but please don’t let that throw you off. Besides, have you ever met a guy who was turned off by butter? The cinnamon-sugar topping provides a nice little crunch to every bite, though I found that half the amount was sufficient. This weekend is the Canada Day long weekend, and in the US, July 4th is just around the corner. Whether you’re looking to lure a boy or impress the one you already have, I think you should definitely celebrate by making some Blueberry Boy Bait.
