Sugar Friday: Cocoa Brownies with Brown Butter & Walnuts

Stock up on milk, it’s brownie time!

Can you believe I’ve been researching, baking, and eating for weeks now and have yet to try a brownie recipe? Yeah, I know, large oversight on my part. No worries, because this Sugar Friday is all about these truly heavenly Cocoa Brownies with Brown Butter & Walnuts. They’re a great way to end the work week and (if they last that long) are a well-deserved treat for the weekend. Back when I worked in an office and spent hours commuting each day, I’d always look forward to Friday nights when I could put on my sweats, turn on the tunes, uncork the wine, and make myself something decadent and calorie-defying. I have to warn you, though, you may be ruined for any other kind of brownie after this one. I know I was, especially after I topped it with some vanilla ice cream. Divine.

I found this Bon Appétit-sourced recipe on one of my favourite blogs at the moment, i am a food blog. Some of you may know foodie and blogger Stephanie Le from her previous well-known blog, momofuku for 2, in which she cooked every recipe in the Momofuku cookbook. Stephanie makes no apologies about how much she loves food, which is reflected in the awesome design of her blog, as well as in her larger-than-life photography. Check out her post for this Bacon Raisin Oatmeal Cookie while you’re there, and tell me you’re not even tempted. Friday nights just got a whole lot more interesting.

Sugar Friday: Classic Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

This buttercream frosting recipe can (or should be) spread on just about anything.

Whew! What a week! My apologies for not having posted a new food blog review this week, folks. Between a teething toddler, editing deadlines, writing projects, and birthdays to celebrate, I was one maxed-out woman! But don’t worry, I’m recovering very nicely right now with a Blueberry Hard Lemonade, and I can hardly wait to share my latest food blog discovery with you (It’s a good one!).

This week for Sugar Friday I’ve chosen a Classic Vanilla Buttercream Frosting from the ultimate everyday-cooking source, Savory Sweet Life. I had two birthday cakes to make this past week, and I wanted to make my own icing, so I turned to blogger Alice Currah, who used to bake and decorate wedding and birthday cakes, and knows a thing or two about frosting. Having a buttercream frosting recipe in your baking repertoire is essential because you can always go back to it for any occasion. Alice’s frosting is so good you can slather it on cakes, cupcakes, muffins, slices of pound cake or even sandwiched between two cookies. It’s perfectly sweet (I can’t stand frosting that’s too sweet), has a soft, spreadable texture, and the recipe is adjustable should you wish to make it thicker for piping. Make sure you read the entire post because there are some great tips and info you should know when it comes to frosting.

Alice just recently released her first cookbook, Savory Sweet Life: 100 Simply Delicious Meals for Every Family Occasion, that would make itself at home in your kitchen very nicely. Savory Sweet Life is rich with tummy-filling, heartwarming recipes that everyone will love, like these fluffy buttermilk pancakes. I think it’d be a great use of time to check out the blog while eating buttercream frosting straight from the bowl. Enjoy.
